Mindfulness Training for Mental and Physical Well-being

What is Mindfulness ?

In a nutshell, Mindfulness is the ability to be able to pay attention and to be aware of what is going on right in front of us, in the present moment. Just as importantly, it’s also the ability of being aware of when we are not paying attention and then being able to refocus our wandering mind and thoughts back to the present. Being Present or Mindful greatly improves our sense of calm and wellbeing.

Many of our stresses are due to internal stress, the stress that comes from within our own minds. It can become overwhelming and affect us emotionally and physically. These unhelpful thoughts might not even be true. Mindfulness helps us manage this unwanted form of stress.

When we are able to pay attention to what is going on right in front of us in the present moment, we are not thinking negatively about something from the past or anxious about something in our future. We can train ourselves to do this through the regular practise of mindfulness.

How is Mindfulness taught ?

This important life skill is taught through various simple, but powerful and practical mindful techniques that are easy to understand and practise, providing you with a mindfulness tool kit. These include exercises to refocus the attention and relax the mind and body, and include mindful breathing, pausing between tasks and refocusing the attention to the present moment.  A range of Mindful Meditations are also used in the training - to find out more about mindful meditations and to listen to an example, click this link.

There is also some consideration of certain aspects of philosophy such as gratitude and acceptance.

As a result of being able to have mindful techniques to hand, we have better control over our thinking mind and therefore our emotions and the linked physical reactions. Our bodies are closely connected to what is going on in our mind, so by learning and using mindful techniques, we will benefit in mind and in body.

As well as helping to manage everyday stresses and anxiety, Mindfulness will improve mental focus, and has been shown to offer many other physical and mental benefits to improve our over-all wellbeing.

Mindfulness is an ancient practise with roots in Eastern religions including Buddhism and was first introduced to the West in the 1960's through practitioners such as the Vietnamese monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. My teaching is secular and uses the practical applications of these teachings.
